ESB certification candidates are expected to have gained key conceptual knowledge of entrepreneurship and small business principles through at least 150 hours of training. Note that students do not need real-world small business management experience to take and pass the exam. Successfully earning this certification validates the skills and knowledge of students aspiring to intermediate-level professions as their own bosses and those aiming for a career in entrepreneurship and small business.

These fundamental concepts include entrepreneurship, opportunity recognition and evaluation, planning, starting and operating a business, marketing and sales, venture capital and seed funding, and financial management.
Country-Specific Exam or Universal Exam
- - ESB national exams test knowledge specific to doing business in a given country. Currency and terminology are tailored to specific countries. ESB candidates must choose a country-specific exam when available.
- - ESB universal exams are suitable for any ESB candidate worldwide. All currencies are expressed in euros.
